In a notable move ahead of the upcoming general election, a pair of prominent personalities in Nepali politics have teamed up. This coalition emerges in the aftermath of large-scale and fatal youth-led demonstrations that rocked the country earlier this year and eventually led to the ouster of the sitting government.
A Pledge to Tackle Young People's Demands
Media figure Rabi Lamichhane, who leads the Rastriya Swatantra Party (RSP), and Kathmandu Mayor Balendra Shah, a one-time rapper, have officially vowed to focus on the issues raised by the new generation. This commitment follows the violent anti-corruption protests that occurred in September, which led to considerable loss of life.
"Consensus should not be as the leader seeks, it should be what the nation requires," stated Lamichhane following the agreement was signed.
The September uprising was triggered by public frustration over a temporary government ban on social media platforms. This incident acted as a spark for deeper discontent stemming from years of economic stagnation and longstanding allegations of systemic political corruption.
Details of the Fresh Electoral Partnership
According to the official pact, the positions for the approaching election have been clarified. Rabi Lamichhane will continue to serve as the leader of the RSP. Meanwhile, Balendra Shah will be the party's nominee for the role of prime minister in the election set for 5 March.
- Rabi Lamichhane: A popular 51-year-old TV host, he established the RSP in 2022, channeling widespread public dissatisfaction with the nation's established political class. He has previously held the posts of deputy prime minister and interior minister. He was recently released on bail in a case involving alleged cooperative fraud and organized crime.
- Balendra Shah (Balen): The 35-year-old mayor of Kathmandu is viewed as a key player in Nepal's ongoing political shift. He played a role in forming the interim government that came to power after the ousted administration was dissolved.
Broader Government Discussions Taking Place
In a related development, the current interim prime minister over the weekend conducted meetings with a number of leading political figures. These discussions involved former prime ministers and the heads of other mainstream parties, marking the first such dialogue since the period of the uprising.
After these meetings, the prime minister posted on social media to state that holding a free and fair election is a shared responsibility. The message affirmed the government's dedication to guaranteeing a secure and fear-free atmosphere for the polls, adding that efforts are being made to eliminate any uncertainty.
