Mercedes team principal Toto Wolff is in advanced talks to offload a portion of his ownership stake in the Mercedes Formula 1 team.

The deal estimates the Mercedes team at £4.6bn – a record for an F1 team – after McLaren was appraised at £3.5 billion in an adjustment to corporate structure in September.

Wolff, who holds one-third of the Mercedes F1 operation, plans to divest a shareholding approximately 5%.

Wolff, aged 53 will remain as team boss and CEO should the deal proceed.

Ownership Breakdown

The other shareholders in the team are Mercedes-Benz and industrial group Ineos Group, who both hold a third of the enterprise.

An official representative stated: "We will be making no comment on the matter. The governance of the team stays unchanged, and all three partners are dedicated to the ongoing success of the brand in F1."

Valuation Increase

The deal signifies a significant increase in value of the Mercedes team since Ineos Group bought its stake for £208 million in 2022.

The rise reflects the expansion in valuations of F1 teams recently due to the increasing appeal of the sport around the world.

This was also seen in the box-office performance of the Formula 1 film starring Brad Pitt, which was released last summer and has grossed more than $630m (£458 million) at the box office.

The film represents the actor's top-grossing movie and the most successful sports movie to date.

Present Standings

The Mercedes team are second in the team standings, behind McLaren Racing, with three Grands Prix remaining in the current championship.

Mercedes' primary racer British driver George Russell has secured victory in 2 of the 21 grands prix this year and is in fourth place in the individual standings behind McLaren's Lando Norris and Oscar Piastri, and Red Bull's Max Verstappen.

Mercedes secured a unprecedented eight straight team titles and seven driver championships, six for Lewis Hamilton and one by Nico Rosberg, from 2014 to 2021.
